Crazy Cool WOWO Contests (no replies)

How many folks can remember some of the crazy contests that 1190-WOWO would run if not once but perhaps once in awhile?

I can recall a few so I'll share them with you here.

The 'Name That Sound' contest was a good one. Albeit simple in context, it did have listeners making some pretty interesting guesses along the way, as WOWO jox gave clues out over the air before and after they played the mystery sound. WOWO put on this contest in 1975 or 1976, I seem to remember. One sound in particular that was in the contest was the World Famous WOWO Fire Escape, as the creaky metal stairs of the fire escape were lowered slowly to ground level. Then there was another mystery sound later in the contest that turned out to be one of the doors of one of Fort Wayne's performing arts halls.

Another WOWO contest I recall was the 'Sing Our Thing' contest, where WOWO listeners were given opportunity to compose their own lyrics and melody for what they believe would make for the next great WOWO ID jingle and then they could call a special number at the station to submit their entry. I recall Jack Underwood playing a promo for the contest over the air and the promo contained clips from what some eager 'Sing Our Thing' contest entrants had already submitted and some of those clips were hilarious!

Anyways those are just a couple great WOWO-1190 contests that I can recall and I'd be interested in hearing about some of the great and wacky WOWO contests that you remember and when they aired.

Sometime in the late 1970s I believe it was either Ron Gregory or Chris Roberts who would on occasion feature an oldie from the 1950s or 1960s on their show and they would introduce the oldie with a recorded bit called 'The Old Record Retriever.' This bit was a charachter voice of an aging man who said something like "This is the Ooooold Record Retriever with another great hit from 1190-WOWO that you haven't heard in years!!!!!" followed by a 1960s rock/pop, style jingle that would lead into the oldie. I wonder if anyone here remembers that bit too and if they happen to have it would they be willing to post it to the HistoryofWOWO site?

Today, June 6, 2012 is a sad day in Fort Wayne Radio and TV history. Jay Walker passed away today in Fort Wayne. Jay "The Hugger" Walker was a "LYV Guy" in the early 70's at WLYV. He worked at WPTA TV anchoring prime time evening weather, then left and joined the WOWO morning team with Bob Sievers for a time, later returning to WPTA to join our highly successful morning team with myself and Jennifer Blomquist. He also provided weather forecasts for many area radio stations and had a tremendous following.

Jay will always be remembered for his wit, sense of humor, a caring smile and "spritzles." Jay's been watching over me in my studio in Durango from a picture of the three of us from the WPTA morning team, since I moved to Durango 8 years ago. Now he's looking down on my bald head, probably planning a healthy dumping of spritzles. (Jay, we need the rain....please!) Rest in peace brother! And my thoughts will be with his wife Deb

How about three cheers for Bob Chase?

First, I believe he's the longest-tenured WOWO air personality EVER, at 56 years. That passes Bob "Mr. WOWO" Sievers who did 4 years parttime and 51 years fulltime, even when you add 'em together!

Second, Bob Chase did EVERYTHING. He interviewed Elvis, jocked, did sports, and of course did the games of his beloved Fort Wayne Komets hockey team.

Third, Bob is STILL doing those Komets games! I believe coming up will be his 59th season. I'm only approaching my 56th birthday, so I bow to this man who was "gettin' 'er done" before I was born! He truly is the last link to WOWO's storied past, and it'll be the serious end of an era when he steps away from that mic.

Thanks, Bob Chase. What a ride you've had, sir.

I enjoy the airchecks of Bodie The Janitor here on the site, with Bodie's visits to the shows of Ron Gregory and Calvin Richards. I heard these visits in real time as a young man in northeastern Tennessee, and it's fascinating to see the photos of Bodie that Randy has posted here.

I did some research of my own on Bodie, and it looks like Estel Bodenhorn passed away in about 1995 after having almost 20 years of life after his retirement as WOWO's janitor. Does anyone know who the young men in the 70s flowered shirts are that are in the photos of Bodie on the Jack Underwood Show as he receives his proclamation from President Carter? I'm guessing it was grandsons, and they may have even lived with him.

Anybody have any insight?

Listening to Bob Chase on Komet Hockey, brings back so many memories of my high school days in Reading, Michigan. I can remember Bob Sievers, Jack Underwood and Bob Chase coming to our high school for "Sock Hops." I can also remember the excitement each and every one of us students had when there was a "Sock Hop Dance," coming to our town and we could hardly wait until the next one was coming. What great guys all three of these men were, and I actually think they had as much fun as we did. Elvis was new and I think we asked for his music and the "Bunny Hop" more than any other music, but we all loved Bobby Darien and Dion. I miss those days and only wish there was something for our teens to do today so they would know a big part of our memory and history. God Bless all of them!

We both remember these two radio personality names - Ron Britain and Barney Pip. Barney would blow on a trumpet - making strange sounds to introduce songs and such.

I wanted to thank you so much for this site. My Dad was Homer Evans and he worked at the transmitter for 27 years. As I clicked on the airchecks, I was struck about how much WOWO was ingrained in my life. Truly a great place to be.

Dad and Bob Sievers were good friends and Bob was one of a kind and someone that I could look up to and aspire to be. Listening to him on the EBS alert and the time that a streaker went through the newsroom were events that I never forgot and for a moment was feeling like I was in the kitchen at the house that we lived.

The greatest thing about this site was the pictures. One in particular brought a lump to my throat. It was a picture of the transmitter and as I looked closely at it, I saw a man smiling on the roof. Almost as if he were coming down through the clouds, there was my Dad, smiling at me. Well it was more than a lump to my throat, I could not help but smile back.
Thank you again so much.

My Father, Guy Harris, was Program Director of WOWO from 1953 to 1957. The WOWO Website has a great interview with
Cal Stewart which tells of the transitions in radio during these days. I was pretty young, born in 1947, but was able to
spend many hours hangin around the station. Going to record hops and stamping people's hands so they could get back
in if they left (the stamp would show up under the blue light). I think I got paid a quarter. I went to Komet's games and
even Pistons games before they moved to Detroit.

My Dad left in 1957. He was transferred to KDKA in Pittsburgh, later on to WIND in Chicago. He ended up here in Texas
working with Crosley Broadcasting(Later Avco) managing WOAI in San Antonio, He Passed away of a heart attack in
1970 at the young age of 49.

Just recently came across this website and brought back memories. Thanks Randy !!!

Greetings all--
I am new to this group and joined to help fill in some moemory gaps.
After DXing and listening to WOWO off and on since I was a kid summering on Long Island (NY), I found myself actually living and working in Ft. Wayne for a few years in the late 1990s to about early 2000. Of course I had to visit the studio and even check out the ol "Fire Escape." Great times but, for the life of me I can only recall one or two of the on-air personalities from back then. Can anyone help me by listing some of the names I knew on WOWO in say 1999-2000? Sure would appreciate it.
One host recognized my NY accent and recommended me to try "Julies Family Pizza" in Avilla knowing I hadn't found "good" pizza in town yet and I finally did that. (Great pizza there too especiall their Seafood Pizza!). I'm trying to remember those names I knew then from WOWO. That one host, I think, left WOWO after some sort of legal dispute about something (contract maybe) but I don't know where he went. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance all, hope to visit Ft. Wayne and Avilla again next Summer on a last road trip across America.

The recent posting by Bob K. of an aircheck from Memorial Day weekend in 1977 reminded me of one of my favorite WOWO memories, listening to the station exactly one year earlier on Memorial Day weekend in 1976. My sister and I drove from southern Michigan to the big race in Indianapolis that weekend, so we listened to WOWO during the entire trip. Fortunately for me, the special feature that year was playing only songs from my favorite musical year, 1966!

Hey Bob, any chance you saved some audio from that weekend and could post it on the site?

I was lucky enough to host a few overnight shows back in the 1980s on the Mighty 1190. It was an awesome and humbling experience to crack the mic and know you were being heard halfway around the globe.

Calls would regularly come in from the Eastern seaboard with song requests, and from every other place you could imagine.

The weirdest call I ever got came in from New Orleans one night in the wee hours. It was some crazy dude calling from a phone booth, half raving. He kept asking me to stop playing "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins because it was sending some kind of evil rays into his brain. Guess he'd had too much fun on Bourbon Street!

I also recall the sudden transition in the studio. I'd be wrapping up the Saturday overnight show, with the studio lights dimmed and everything low key. Suddenly Jack Underwood would leap in the studio at 7AM, fresh as a daisy, and flip on all the lights. It was blinding, kind of like the sun coming up instantaneously!

Just a few fun memories I wanted to share.

This is an unfair question - how do you choose between Bob Sievers, Jack Underwood, Young Chris, Carol Ford, Ken Moore, Calvin Richards, Neil McGinley and so many others? Since I was in high school when I did a lot of my listening, I only heard Bob briefly in the morning (and was distracted elsewhere when Phil Gardner was in town), rarely heard Jack, caught a few minutes of Chris (always tried to get in for Onesy-Twoseys and the Sunshine Hall of Fame Record), and got too tired to hear much of Carol, so they person I spent the most time with was Ron. He always had a joke (sure, some were corny, but that was part of the fun), an upbeat personality, and just sounded like he was having fun - which just made you feel good too! He was always willing to poke fun at things - and I liked that as well.

The Bob Sievers EBS false alert is very interesting. It's the first audio I've heard of the event. At the time, I lived in Connecticut and hung out at a station in Norwich. I went to see my friend, an engineer who told me about the event. I replied that it would happen on one of the few days I didn't listen to the radio. Thanks for all the work you put into this site.
