Listening to Bob Chase on Komet Hockey, brings back so many memories of my high school days in Reading, Michigan. I can remember Bob Sievers, Jack Underwood and Bob Chase coming to our high school for "Sock Hops." I can also remember the excitement each and every one of us students had when there was a "Sock Hop Dance," coming to our town and we could hardly wait until the next one was coming. What great guys all three of these men were, and I actually think they had as much fun as we did. Elvis was new and I think we asked for his music and the "Bunny Hop" more than any other music, but we all loved Bobby Darien and Dion. I miss those days and only wish there was something for our teens to do today so they would know a big part of our memory and history. God Bless all of them!

My brother and I used to listen to a LOT of late evening/night radio - sneaking our transistor radios into bed with us, under the covers. I know we listened to WOWO alot - hard to get many stations in the hills of WV in the 60's!

We both remember these two radio personality names - Ron Britain and Barney Pip. Barney would blow on a trumpet - making strange sounds to introduce songs and such.

Were these WOWO personalities or if not, what station were they with??

Thanks so much!!

In Florida, WOWO still comes in occasionally at night, whereas in days of yore, it used to boom it very clear. My guess is the "clear channel" is still there, only the station can't fully use it because of the reduced power. It seems to me that New York's WEVD went overboard in killing WOWO's power, when a mere reorienting of the nighttime pattern away from New York would have sufficed. Indiana could use a national voice again; what would it take to get WOWO back to 50K nighttime power, with protection (if necessary) for New York?

I'm Tom. My partner Steve and I, owned WFDT, Columbia city, from 73-75. In about 72, I was hired by Bob Moomey at WIND, Chicago, to record 2500 music carts for the "Number One Music" format he ran. A few years later WIND went talk, and shipped all the carts to WOWO for your format. Just wondering what became of those carts?

Hello from Buffalo. Question for anyone out there- I recently found an acetate. It's for a relatively unknown (but valuable) R&R 45 from Buffalo NY band 'the Rhythm Rockers' aka 'Ted Russell & The Rhythm Rockers'. The correct label for the original 45 was Terock Record, which was either based out of Buffalo or Cleveland. This acetate is a 10" record, plays at 33rpm, and bears a typical (relatively plain) acetate label, It has the song titles typed on and it says 'Recorded by W.O.W.O' (although on one side it says instead W.O.W.). It seems to play the regular version of these songs - I don't think it's live or anything. So I don't know why it would have a connection to WOWO. Do you have any ideas? Was there a recording studio or pressing plant connected to WOWO? Have you ever seen acetates issued by WOWO? And do you think anyone would ever spell the call letters out as W.O.W.O instead of WOWO? Thanks in advance for any help... Bob Paxon

I wanted to thank you so much for this site. My Dad was Homer Evans and he worked at the transmitter for 27 years. As I clicked on the airchecks, I was struck about how much WOWO was ingrained in my life. Truly a great place to be.

Dad and Bob Sievers were good friends and Bob was one of a kind and someone that I could look up to and aspire to be. Listening to him on the EBS alert and the time that a streaker went through the newsroom were events that I never forgot and for a moment was feeling like I was in the kitchen at the house that we lived.

The greatest thing about this site was the pictures. One in particular brought a lump to my throat. It was a picture of the transmitter and as I looked closely at it, I saw a man smiling on the roof. Almost as if he were coming down through the clouds, there was my Dad, smiling at me. Well it was more than a lump to my throat, I could not help but smile back.

Thank you again so much.

My Father, Guy Harris, was Program Director of WOWO from 1953 to 1957. The WOWO Website has a great interview with
Cal Stewart which tells of the transitions in radio during these days. I was pretty young, born in 1947, but was able to
spend many hours hangin around the station. Going to record hops and stamping people's hands so they could get back
in if they left (the stamp would show up under the blue light). I think I got paid a quarter. I went to Komet's games and
even Pistons games before they moved to Detroit.

My Dad left in 1957. He was transferred to KDKA in Pittsburgh, later on to WIND in Chicago. He ended up here in Texas
working with Crosley Broadcasting(Later Avco) managing WOAI in San Antonio, He Passed away of a heart attack in
1970 at the young age of 49.

Greetings all--
I am new to this group and joined to help fill in some moemory gaps.
After DXing and listening to WOWO off and on since I was a kid summering on Long Island (NY), I found myself actually living and working in Ft. Wayne for a few years in the late 1990s to about early 2000. Of course I had to visit the studio and even check out the ol "Fire Escape." Great times but, for the life of me I can only recall one or two of the on-air personalities from back then. Can anyone help me by listing some of the names I knew on WOWO in say 1999-2000? Sure would appreciate it.
One host recognized my NY accent and recommended me to try "Julies Family Pizza" in Avilla knowing I hadn't found "good" pizza in town yet and I finally did that. (Great pizza there too especiall their Seafood Pizza!). I'm trying to remember those names I knew then from WOWO. That one host, I think, left WOWO after some sort of legal dispute about something (contract maybe) but I don't know where he went. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance all, hope to visit Ft. Wayne and Avilla again next Summer on a last road trip across America.

The recent posting by Bob K. of an aircheck from Memorial Day weekend in 1977 reminded me of one of my favorite WOWO memories, listening to the station exactly one year earlier on Memorial Day weekend in 1976. My sister and I drove from southern Michigan to the big race in Indianapolis that weekend, so we listened to WOWO during the entire trip. Fortunately for me, the special feature that year was playing only songs from my favorite musical year, 1966!
Hey Bob, any chance you saved some audio from that weekend and could post it on the site?

I was lucky enough to host a few overnight shows back in the 1980s on the Mighty 1190. It was an awesome and humbling experience to crack the mic and know you were being heard halfway around the globe.

Calls would regularly come in from the Eastern seaboard with song requests, and from every other place you could imagine.

The weirdest call I ever got came in from New Orleans one night in the wee hours. It was some crazy dude calling from a phone booth, half raving. He kept asking me to stop playing "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins because it was sending some kind of evil rays into his brain. Guess he'd had too much fun on Bourbon Street!

I also recall the sudden transition in the studio. I'd be wrapping up the Saturday overnight show, with the studio lights dimmed and everything low key. Suddenly Jack Underwood would leap in the studio at 7AM, fresh as a daisy, and flip on all the lights. It was blinding, kind of like the sun coming up instantaneously!

Just a few fun memories I wanted to share.

A Rare Sunday/Monday Broadcast (3 replies)

During the big blizzard of 1978, the on-air staff pulled long shifts as it was nearly impossible for people to get in or out of the station. WOWO usually went off the air at midnight Sunday/Monday and stayed off the air until 5:00 AM Monday, and during that time I think they did transmitter work, etc. I was up listening as all of the normal 9PM - Midnight Sunday public affairs shows were scrapped in favor of news and updates on the blizzard and wondered what would happen at midnight. If I recall, Calvin Richards was on and after the news they would play the DJ jingle. This night, he played all the jingles with a slight overlap, one after another "Bob Sievers...Jack Underwood...Chris Roberts...etc." and explained that this was sort of a Twilight Zone time so he thought that would be appropriate. Given that I am a WOWO jingle nut - I thought it was great and assembled my own similar montage to entertain myself! Somewhere I have a tape of part of this moment, but I remember that the recorder ran out of tape in the middle (thus the need to create my own).

This is an unfair question - how do you choose between Bob Sievers, Jack Underwood, Young Chris, Carol Ford, Ken Moore, Calvin Richards, Neil McGinley and so many others? Since I was in high school when I did a lot of my listening, I only heard Bob briefly in the morning (and was distracted elsewhere when Phil Gardner was in town), rarely heard Jack, caught a few minutes of Chris (always tried to get in for Onesy-Twoseys and the Sunshine Hall of Fame Record), and got too tired to hear much of Carol, so they person I spent the most time with was Ron. He always had a joke (sure, some were corny, but that was part of the fun), an upbeat personality, and just sounded like he was having fun - which just made you feel good too! He was always willing to poke fun at things - and I liked that as well.

The Bob Sievers EBS false alert is very interesting. It's the first audio I've heard of the event. At the time, I lived in Connecticut and hung out at a station in Norwich. I went to see my friend, an engineer who told me about the event. I replied that it would happen on one of the few days I didn't listen to the radio. Thanks for all the work you put into this site.

I 'am 72 and glad I found this site. Was in the Navy 1955 to 1975 and we would listen to WOWO on the ships Collin R-390 (Mil) and would rebroadcast it on the ship's radio system, and we were off of Italy an Greece in 1956 to 1957.
Born in Ft Wayne 1938, 5529 S Webster st went to Central HS, then to the Navy in 1955!
